Exceptional Talent visa

If you are internationally endorsed and recognised as an authority or a leader in the field of Science, Humanities, Engineering, Medicine, digital technology or the arts, you are a non-EEA or a Swiss national then you may apply to work in the UK under the Exceptional Talent Visa(Tier 1).

The application consists of two stages –

Stage 1 – You must initially apply to the Home Office to obtain an endorsement as a leader or an emerging leader in your relevant field. The fields and its considering bodies are –

  • science
  • engineering
  • humanities
  • medicine
  • digital technology
  • the arts

Your application for endorsement is considered by:

  • Arts Council England
  • British Academy
  • Royal Academy of Engineering
  • Royal Society
  • Tech City UK

Stage 2 – even if you obtain the endorsement from the Home Office, the visa under this category is not automatic. You must then make the application to regularise your stay in the UK – Visa application in country or from outside.

There are limited places available under this visa category, with 500 places released on both 6 April and 1 October each year.

You can stay in the UK under this category up to –

  • 5 years and 4 months if you apply outside the UK
  • 5 years if you apply inside the UK

At the end of the 5th year you can then extend it to another 5 years. However even if you are endorsed you cannot take up work as a doctor or dentist in training or work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.
